About us

The gallery is circular, a refreshingly unconventional take on the typical white, cubic gallery space. It’s both engaging and welcoming. ‘Galleries can be daunting and intimidating spaces for the general public,’ explains Cecily, ‘so we’ve really tried to create an inviting, friendly environment for people. I find the new space is also more accessible, and we have more visits by the general public.’

The gallery is crammed with art from top to bottom, Cecily also utilizes the unique outdoor walkways and the sunlit courtyard to create an extraordinary ambience with sculpture, paintings and installation art. Along with exhibitions of her own pieces, Cecily selects works by guest artists based on standards of technique, content, concept and, of course, size (there is still limited space in the gallery).

Cecily’s own work bears strong signature design elements layered with rustic, nostalgic sentiments. Her use of blues, oranges and rusty browns for an overall earthy quality, combined with a centrally placed composition, has been described by journalists as reminiscent of the ’70s retro look. Much of her work reflects on our country and its people, or what she describes as ‘the mental and physical state of being a South African citizen’, while her landscapes reflect both her travels in rural South Africa and her spiritual journey.

Robert van den Berg, a sculptor, stylist and chef, groups together mediums such as wire, cement and found objects to transform them into mesmerizing sculptural forms. Cecily describes his talent as creating ‘everything from nothing’, and his works are just one of the many reasons that make Gallery at Duncan Yard a must-visit.
